320 Fruit Tree Seedlings Planted in WDC Pineapple Buffer Zones and Gullies

Dole Philippines Inc. and Wao Development Corporation conducted a tree planting/growing activity in Barangay Balatin, Wao, Lanao del Sur on April 29, 2022. This initiative partnered with Shine Wao Project under Mahintana Foundation, Inc. 45 youth individuals who took part in the activity came from various youth organizations in Wao, Lanao del Sur. Participants planted 320 fruit tree seedlings in the pineapple buffer zone and Gullies (identified WDC non-arable areas). To add, MENRO Wao also donated twenty different fruit tree seedlings.

Planting trees in gullies helps prevent soil compaction, which occurs when soil under the surface compacts and hardens, reducing water infiltration and increasing runoff. The large canopies of trees also help prevent soil erosion by reducing the impact of rain onto the ground. The water drains down the leaves and branches and soaks into the soil rather than forcefully hitting the ground, which decreases the amount of soil that is washed away with the rain.

Planting trees as buffer zones are vegetative measures established in the area to prevent pests from crossing in between blocks. This activity not just aims to provide a safe habitat for endemic flora and fauna, but also provide temporary shades for laborers during rest time and improve aesthetic value of the plantation. Engaging in tree planting activities strengthens the communities, and it also helps youth individuals build a strong relationship and camaraderie with one another by working together to preserve the environment.
